Rob Hofmann Windsurfing Clinic on Maui (Hawaii) 15-30 November report.
I have to say, that after many clinics I have done over last five years this was the one with the most exotic and far location.
I’ve been with my students to Egypt (Dahab- Marsa Alam) for several times, Marocco (Dahkla), Cape Verde (Sal), but Maui was defintly a dream come true for all of my students. The organisation of the trip was a bit more difficult, because everybody was flying out of different airports from Italy and Germany, but at the end my 16 students all made it to the Island of Maui.
Our home was based in Haiku, and our technical base was the “Haiwaiian Island Surf and Sport”(HISS) Rental in Kahului. I chose the HISS, because they have all the 2014 STARBOARD range that i needed, and that was just perfect fot all my students.
We had all conditions from strong Trades (4.7 sails) to light Trades (6.5 Freeride sails) in Kanaha, to great flatwater conditions in KIhei (south part of Maui) with 20 – 25 knots. At the end we had 9 windsurfing days out of 14, that is not bad for the month of November.
We also had a few good swells, so everybody was stoked from the windsurfing point of view.
Obviously we had to visit all the locations, that are a “must” on Maui, and so we were quite happy to have a few days without wind.
We drove around the West maui mountains. We wachted the sunrise on top of the Haleakala (3.050 m), we drove the road to Hana (692 turns). Went to Lahaina, Makena and much more.
But coming back to the windsurfing part, we enjoyed as mentioned the beach of Kanaha and everybody could use some bigger gear on the lighter days, and try out the new Starboard Carve 111 and 121, the Futura 101, 111,121 and the Kode Freestyle wave 103 and 94, and Kode Wave 92.
This location is close to the airport, and has a huge parking area and perfect grass to rigg , and to do some theory in the shade.
Clear water and a sandy beach make this location a dream for every freerider and freestyler and wave entry.
The days the wind was a bit more fom the North, we drove to Kihei (just a 15 min drive) and had perfect flat water conditions for jibing and getting good speed. I really have to thank Dennis and all the stuff from HISS, for the great support and assistance.
It was an amazing 2 weeks where everybody improved the windsurfing skills, but also learned that the MAUI feeling is unique in the world, and it’s a place where every Windsurfer has to go once in his lifetime!! I prefer to let the picstures talk!!
See you in 2014 with more Rob Hofmann Windsurfing Clinics!! ALOHA
ROB HOFMANN "OLD GUNS" CLINIC
Roberto "Clinic" Hofmann organized yet another windsurfing course. This time, it took place in Torbole, on Lake Garda, Italy from June 13th to June 16th. There were a total of 10 people attending, which allowed Roberto to really focus on each of his students' progress. Here is his report:
"We came up with the "Old Guns" thing simply because it was a funny thing to say! There are a lot of young guns out there, pushing the sport, but the older generation isn't ready to give up yet! As a matter of fact, it's the opposite: they are very tough and persistent!
The stage was centered around by the bugbear of windsurfing: the power jibe. The requirement to sign up for my clinic was to be able to get planing in the straps. Over the four days of the course, all aspects of the jibe and its variations were studied and practiced.
The wind worked in our favor during the 4 days of the clinic with the local Southern Ora wind ranging from 12 to 20 knots. The temperatures were finally worthy of mid-June with about 28 degrees everyday. Even the water temperature stabilized around 18 degrees which meant crashing your jibes wasn't as tragic!
In the morning, we always did 90 minutes of theory; more than that and you're brain washed; to have a certain continuity in the movements of the jibe. In windsurfing, it is important to simulate the different movements of the hands and feet during the jibe in order to visualize the move in your head before you get out on the water!
Everybody's made considerable progress and this has given me a lot of satisfaction! I'm positive that the clinic will be repeated next year. Ciao!
ROB HOFMANN IN VASSILIKI!!
Rob Hofmann visits the Starboard/Severne-powered Club Vass in Lefkada (Greece) and shares why it's such a good place to go whether you're a beginner or an advanced slalomer looking for strong winds.
I've just spent a great week visiting the biggest windsurfing center in Greece, on the Island of Lefkada: Club Vass. I went there to check out whether the place was suitable for a clinic. Colin Dixon and Marco Wedele have told me many times to come over and visit them in the summer time, so I thought the first week of July would be the perfect moment to go there!
First I drove from Rome to Brindisi, in Southern Italy and took the ferry from Brindisi to Igoumenitsa, which took about 7 hours! I then drove the nice scenic route down to Lefkada, which was about 140 km. The week I spend there was windy with between 15 and 30 knots every day! Perfect for beginners in the morning due to the light onshore winds and then, around 3 PM, the wind shifts and comes from its thermal direction to reach full strength around 6-7 PM. A perfect place for high-wind slalom sailing and freeriding as well.
Thanks to the support of Club Vass, I was able to store all my gear on location. And the team is always super helpful and friendly! The Club Vass Center also has quite a few SUP boards, that are great for morning sessions and exploring the amazing bay. What's also impressive are the 250 rigged Severne Sails and the 150 boards (unfortunately some Fanatic as well... laughs) waiting on stand-by for a lucky customer!
I sailed every day on my iSonic 107 and a 7.0m² sail and reached speeds of almost 36 knots, due to the flat water conditions under the mountain!! I think this is a great place for beginners, advanced and pros to have a lot of fun. This place is mostly known to British people, and the center just celebrated its 25th anniversary this year! Still, the location is not overcrowded and the atmosphere is really nice. I recommend to everyone to plan a visit to Club Vass in Vassiliki and enjoy some of the best gear over there!!
Thanks a lot to Center Manager Ollie Scott and to Jay Haysey from GlobalShots UK for the action pics!! Jay is in Club Vass for the whole summer and takes pictures of everybody... a great opportunity to have good sailing action pictures!!
VINDICIO CUP 2013 VICTORY!
On the 29th and 30th of June, the 8th Edition of the Trofeo Vindicio Slalom was held in the beautiful location of Vindicio, about 100km south of Rome. The wind didn't show up on Saturday due to some passing thunderstorms, but a great thermal wind kicked in on Sunday, allowing the organizers to complete 5 rounds of Slalom. With 20 participants from central and southern Italy, the action was great! The wind was between 15 and 20 knots and made the conditions perfect for slalom racing. Read what Roberto's report below:
" It was the perfect day for me with five victories in all five races. Sure, there weren't any of the top guy from Lake Garda, but still, the level was high and every one was fast. I had five perfect starts, and once you are in front, it’s quite easy to control the fleet. Due to the fact that we did races with the complete fleet (15 Pro racers and 5 Amateurs), the first gibe was very important. This is the reason why I love the iSonic 117. For me, it's the perfect board when I'm on 8.6m² and 9.2m²: easy planing, great top speed and easy jibing.
These kind of events are the perfect occasion for all the Slalom racers to test the speed, practice their starts and get racing in! For me, it was also a good opportunity to help people tune their boards (a lot of guys were on Starboard) and sails. A lot of racers still have a hard time to find the right tuning, and this is why it’s important for me to motivate them and give them my experience in tuning!!
I know racing is not for everybody, but it’s a lot of fun and adrenaline and everybody should give it a try, at least once!!
Back from the DEFI WIND in GRUISSAN!
Here a few shots on the beach and on the water!!

GRUPPPO DAHAB STAGE 17 - 24 Marzo 2013
WINDSURFING STAGE DAHAB 2013
Vorrei fare un ringraziamento personale a tutti i partecipanti: Roberto B. – Fabrizio – Alessio B.- Riccardo – Filippo – Claudio M. – Roberto N.- Simone- Alessandra – Brando – Claudio L.- Massimo- Davide Z. – Veronica- Giacomo- Dario –Luciano – Francesca – Erwin- Raffaella – Marco S. – Massimiliano – Sara- Jacopo- Marco M.- Mariangela – Mimmo – Danilo – Alberto- Roberto – Piero – Angelo – Alessandro – Paolo – Alessio S. – Davide M. – Andreas- Walter..
